What does Spear do?

Spear, formerly known as Resurgo, is a youth employment charity. For more than two decades, we’ve been running the Spear Programme – a proven, community-based coaching programme that helps young people break down barriers and thrive in work and life.

The Spear Programme supports young people aged 16-24 who aren’t in work or education. It’s free and available at our centres across the UK. We particularly support young people who face barriers to work, such as having mental health challenges or few qualifications.

Spear works: over 70% of Spear trainees are in work or study a year later.

In fact, Spear has been independently rated as one of the UK’s most impactful youth employment programmes.

Our strategy

Since we launched in 2003, we’ve worked with more than 11,000 young people. In 2025, we opened two more Spear Centres, in St Helens, in Merseyside, and York.

We partner with local churches to deliver Spear, and welcome young people of all faiths and none. Our strategy is to grow Spear faster, to reach more young people every year through opening more Spear Centres in areas of the greatest need in the UK. We’re targeting the North East and the Midlands.

We’ll grow our reach while maintaining the quality of Spear and continuing to gather evidence of our impact, refining our operating models based on this evidence.

Coaching, community, impact and connecting young people with forward-thinking businesses will remain at the heart of everything we do.
